Items for Communication October 2010
Following the last Committee meeting in October, the GWPC Committee would like to update members on the following:
- The Committee was sad to learn of the death of Major Wilkinson in October of this year at the age of 94. As a tribute to our former President and founder member, a minutes silence was held at the GWPC Open show. A tribute to Major Wilkinson will appear in the next Club yearbook. The Club is also planning to donate a trophy in memory of Major Wilkinson which will be awarded at the AGM each year to the most successful GWP in the Field Trial season. Once this has been arranged details of the trophy will be announced.
- The Committee has regrettably received the resignation of our Secretary Claire Shaw. Claire has served the Club for over 20 years and has given up many hours of her time to ensure the smooth running of the GWPC. The Committee has appointed Alex Friar as Acting Secretary until the next AGM.
- Paul Evans has taken over from Alex Friar as Membership Secretary for the GWPC – all new member enquiries should now be passed to Paul. Paul is also still collating responses for the Email Consent form.
Future Events
- The GWPC is holding ‘Requirements of a Dog Show Judge (Rules & Regs)’ seminar on 7 November. This is being held at Ranby Village Hall, Nottinghamshire. Please contact Alex Webster for more details.
- The Kennel Club Discover Dogs event takes place at Earls Court on 13 and 14 November. The GWPC will have volunteers in attendance representing the breed.

Items of Interest
- The Committee has recently contacted the Kennel Club requesting that they review future CC allocation for GWPs to take into account the shows that charge admission to the public. This has been following feedback from members at the AGM as the vast majority of breeders continue to dock GWPs due to their dual purpose roles. The Kennel Club has responded advising that this is the first time any contact has been made into allocation for shows that charge admission. The Kennel Club have asked for proof of the impact on entries for those shows that charge and the Committee will now be responding with a case to prove this important concern.
- The Committee has recently contacted the Kennel Club to request that they add the DNA vWD test (or dogs DNA clear by parentage) as a mandatory test for Accredited Breeders in GWPs .
- The Committee have recently been made aware of a study that has taken place into the most common breeds requiring emergency caesareans in the UK over the last 10 years. The German Wirehaired Pointer appears in the Top 10 list of breeds with the highest caesarean rates.
