Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM)

GWPC Committee Health Statement

There has been much discussion on the subject of Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) and the GWP on various web forums and social networking sites.  This statement gives information on the current position of the GWP Club in relation to this issue.

What is DCM?

DCM is a common form of heart disease in dogs.  It is the enlargement (dilation) of the heart chambers and a thinning of the heart muscle leading to a marked reduction in the ability of the heart to contract and therefore pump blood (Heart Failure). The disease is an acquired condition, that is to say the dog is not born with it, but it develops over time.  Although typically physical symptoms show by middle age, it is not uncommon for cases to be diagnosed at much younger ages.  The disease leads to premature death or long-term disability.   Onset in middle age can be mistaken for natural ageing; however tiredness and exercise intolerance are potentially early signs of DCM.  Although viral infections, immune disease and excessive alcohol consumption can all result in DCM in humans, there is no clear evidence that this happens in dogs.  There is a genetic basis to the disease proven in many large and giant breeds (e.g. Doberman, Boxer, Great Dane to name but few).  In these breeds the condition is thought to be caused by a dominant gene, meaning that it is passed down one line unlike a recessive gene, which requires carriers on both sides of a mating to create affected dogs (e.g. von Willebrands Disease).

What is the GWP Club Response?

In March 2011, it was brought to the attention of the GWP Committee that there have been cases of confirmed and suspected DCM involving a small number of GWPs, including younger dogs.  The committee immediately requested that the GWPC Health Sub-Committee investigate this matter.  This investigation is ongoing and it is likely that there will be firm guidance on the subject in the near future. There is no evidence as yet of this being a widespread condition in the GWP.  The GWP Health Sub-Committee will advise in due course on what, if any, action should be taken by the Club and its members.

In the meantime, we have arranged a seminar on this important subject open to all club members and we especially hope that as many breeders as possible will attend.  This will be on Saturday 24th September at Middlewich Community Centre, starting at 12.30 with a buffet lunch followed by the seminar and a questions and answers session.   The Speaker will be Joanna Dukes McEwan BVMS, MVM, PhD, DVC, Dip.ECVIM-CA(Cardiology), MRCVS of the University of Liverpool Small Animal Hospital; and a leading authority on DCM.  The session will cost £15 a head which includes food and drinks – available from Sharon Pinkerton – sharon@bareve.com – 01469 532991/07860 292020

What does the GWP Club Committee Recommend?

Whilst the GWP Club Health Sub-Committee continue with gathering evidence and professional advice, the club recommends that anyone concerned about this condition should consult their veterinary surgeon, especially if they are planning a litter or to use their dog at stud.  It is possible to test for this condition using the Echo-Doppler technique.  Whilst the test is not definitive, it can give an early indication of abnormality, which would require a further test after 12 to 18 months to check for any further adverse changes in heart function.   In most cases, you would need to be referred to a specialist veterinary cardiologist for these tests to be carried out.   Several breeders have already begun this process of testing.

It would also be helpful for any GWP Owner having had experience of heart problems in their own dogs to share that information on a confidential basis with the GWP Health Sub-Committee, and with other breeders/stud dog owners who may plan to breed from the progeny of such dogs.

The key message from the GWP Committee at this time is for owners and breeders not to panic, nor to be complacent.  Whilst there have been few confirmed cases, there have been enough in a breed of this size to prompt concern.  We do encourage testing for two reasons.  Firstly, the more test results that are known, the more we can assess the extent of the problem in the GWP and secondly, if detected in younger dogs, early treatment has been shown in other breeds to slow the progression into heart failure and symptomatic DCM.  By taking positive action now, and working with health conscious and responsible breeders, we aim to eliminate any possibility of this condition becoming a significant problem in the future.

Committee Update – May 2011

Following the first full committee meeting of the new committee for 2011 we are pleased to be able to deliver our first Committee update for the new year.

Field Trial Sub Committee Update

The Field Trial sub committee has been communicating since the AGM and will be meeting on 31 May. At this meeting the grounds that have been offered for trials will be discussed, dates will be arranged and a shortlist of judges will be agreed to approach following ratification to the main committee.  The Club will then be applying for Field Trial licenses and all details of the Field Trials for the forthcoming season will be made available

We have received offers for a number of Field Trial grounds this year and have recently been offered a working test ground at Myerscough near Preston, Lancashire. Further details of this working test will be available very soon.

Rescue Update

There are currently 3 dogs in Rescue – Meg, Lenny and Inca. Meg and Inca have visits with their adopters in the next few days – if these are successful then they will both be going to their new homes very soon.

Lenny is a teenage male GWP – he has been with Rescue for a number of weeks now but we are certain he deserves a home. He is very keen to please and shows great potential to make someone an excellent working companion. He does need someone who is committed to continuing his very basic training and needs someone who at least in the beginning is around for most of the day. Lenny is a typical young GWP – full of bounce and enthusiasm with a great character.

Foster homes – we are desperately looking for foster homes for rescue GWPs in order that they do not need to go into boarding kennels. If anyone can help with fostering then please do get in touch with our rescue coordinator Una Russell – rescue@gwpclub.co.uk

Health Sub Committee Update

The GWPC is pleased to advise that it has set up a new Health Sub Committee for the breed. Consisting of members of the main Committee, the Health Sub Committee will focus on health objectives as driven by the main committee.

The sub committee is now focusing on arranging a Health Seminar for GWPs which amongst other topics will focus on a possible emerging condition within the breed – DCM. The group is also looking at a health plan for the rest of 2011.

More information will be released as it becomes available.

Breed Seminar

The breed judging seminar continues to be arranged at the Kennel Club Building, Stoneleigh, Warwickshire. This seminar is being run in line with the KC Code of Best Practice for Breed Seminars. The main breed speaker is Pam Blay, Pam, Claire Shaw and Sharon Pinkerton will act as assessors on the day.

Assessment places are limited – cost is £20 members, £25 non members and £15 to observers with no assessment.

Please make all enquiries to Alex Webster – alex.webster@gwpclub.co.uk

Newsletter

The next edition of our newsletter will be going out at the beginning of July along with the Open show schedule, voting slips for the 2014 Championship judge and AGM minutes.

Tracy Cartwright would be very pleased to hear from anyone willing to produce an article – watch out – Tracy may be calling on you to put pen to paper!

If anyone has any questions about any aspect of the Club then please do not hesitate to get in touch with one of our committee members. You can also keep in touch with both Club and Rescue news on our Club website or Facebook pages.

The Club would like to hear from anyone with a GWP who would be interested in representing the breed at any of this year’s gamefairs in the breed booths.
Throughout the year the Club will be approached to provide representation at these events. The days are primarily working focused therefore those representing should have a good knowledge of the breed as a working HPR gundog.

It is also essential that the dogs have excellent temperaments and they should be typical of the breed. Owners will also need to have a good knowledge of the breed to provide help and advice.
If anyone if interested in volunteering then please contact Alex Friar – alex@gwpclub.co.uk tel: 01745 852796 in the first instance.

Current request for representation:
Yorkshire Gamefair, Harewood House, Leeds
Sunday May 29th and Monday May 30th 2011

Further details will also be advertised on the Club website & Facebook page

Items for Communication October 2010

Following the last Committee meeting in October, the GWPC Committee would like to update members on the following:

  • The Committee was sad to learn of the death of Major Wilkinson in October of this year at the age of 94. As a tribute to our former President and founder member, a minutes silence was held at the GWPC Open show.  A tribute to Major Wilkinson will appear in the next Club yearbook. The Club is also planning to donate a trophy in memory of Major Wilkinson which will be awarded at the AGM each year to the most successful GWP in the Field Trial season. Once this has been arranged details of the trophy will be announced.
  • The Committee has regrettably received the resignation of our Secretary Claire Shaw. Claire has served the Club for over 20 years and has given up many hours of her time to ensure the smooth running of the GWPC. The Committee has appointed Alex Friar as Acting Secretary until the next AGM.
  • Paul Evans has taken over from Alex Friar as Membership Secretary for the GWPC – all new member enquiries should now be passed to Paul. Paul is also still collating responses for the Email Consent form.

Future Events

  • The GWPC is holding ‘Requirements of a Dog Show Judge (Rules & Regs)’ seminar on 7 November. This is being held at Ranby Village Hall, Nottinghamshire. Please contact Alex Webster for more details.
  • The Kennel Club Discover Dogs event takes place at Earls Court on 13 and 14 November. The GWPC will have volunteers in attendance representing the breed.
  • The Committee is pleased to announce the following dates and judges for future shows as follows:

Championship Shows – to take place at Tomlinsons Canine Centre

10 July 2011 – Judge Mr Chris Atkinson, Specials Judges – TBA

8 July 2012 – Judge Mrs Rachel Thompson (subject to KC Confirmation)

6 July 2013 – Judge Mrs Anne Webster (subject to KC Confirmation)

Open Shows – to take place at Shirland Village Hall

23 October 2011 – Judge Mr Tony Taylor, Specials Judge – Mr Jonathon Parry

28 October 2012 – Judge TBC

Items of Interest

  • The Committee has recently contacted the Kennel Club requesting that they review future CC allocation for GWPs to take into account the shows that charge admission to the public. This has been following feedback from members at the AGM as the vast majority of breeders continue to dock GWPs due to their dual purpose roles. The Kennel Club has responded advising that this is the first time any contact has been made into allocation for shows that charge admission. The Kennel Club have asked for proof of the impact on entries for those shows that charge and the Committee will now be responding with a case to prove this important concern.

  • The Committee has recently contacted the Kennel Club to request that they add the DNA vWD test (or dogs DNA clear by parentage) as a mandatory test for Accredited Breeders in GWPs .
  • The Committee have recently been made aware of a study that has taken place into the most common breeds requiring emergency caesareans in the UK over the last 10 years.  The German Wirehaired Pointer appears in the Top 10 list of breeds with the highest caesarean rates.

About the Rescues:

GWP Rescue Inc (USA) is run by Mary Murray in the USA. GWP Rescue Inc is a Public Charity formed to help GWPs in need. Dedicated to the Rescue and Rehabilitation of GWPs in need. The GWP rescue problem in the USA is unfortunately a much bigger issue in the UK and Mary has a constant battle to raise funding for so many GWPs in need. GWPs are found in ‘Puppy Mills’ in the USA and GWP Rescue Inc have rescued and rehabilitated back to health a number of GWP litters/littermates from puppy mills.  Find out more about their work here – http://www.gwprescue.com/

GWPC Rescue is the rescue service provided by the breed Club for GWPs in need of homes in the UK. Like GWP Rescue Inc all funding and donations received by the GWPC Rescue is used to assist GWPs needing homes. GWPC Rescue assists around 40+ GWPs a year who are requiring homes due to being abandoned, founds as strays or when their owners circumstances change.  Abandoned GWPs in Ireland are a problem, due to there being no facility in Ireland for rehoming GWPs – GWPC Rescue often assists in finding these dogs new homes.

The GWPC Committee regretfully has to announce the retirement of our Secretary Claire Shaw after serving the GWP Club for over 20 years.

We would like to thank Claire for all her hardwork and dedication to the Club over such a long period of time.

Alex Friar has been appointed as Acting Secretary until the Club AGM in March 2011 – please contact Alex with any future Club queries/questions.

A reminder that enclosed with the last GWPC Newsletter was an e-mail consent form, requesting individual consent for the club to use e-mail to communicate with members.

This idea is a direct response to the justifiable comments of GWP Club members and is designed to improve the speed and frequency of club communications – information about shows, field trials, working tests, other club events, AGM/SGM notices etc. and even an option for the ecologically minded with fast broadband who may prefer an electronic copy of the newsletter.

If you have not already done so please help to make this initiative a success by completing and returning the consent form to Paul Evans either as a scanned file by e-mail or by good old snail mail. The addresses are on the form. Alternatively, if your form has gone astray please email paule@gwpclub.co.uk

The GWPC is hosting a KC Seminar on the ‘Requirements of a Dog Show Judge’ (Rules and Regs) on Sunday 7th Nov 2010 run by KC Accredited Trainer, Christina Chapman.

The seminar will take place at Ranby Village Hall, Nottinghamshire from 9:30am to 3pm.

Lunch and refreshments are included.

The seminar will include an exam which is an official Kennel Club recognised qualification.
It is also now a compulsory qualification needed for any first time CC Judge.

Costs: £20 – GWPC Members
£25 – Non-Members
£15 – Anyone wishing to attend but not take the exam

If you would like further details or would like to book your place on this seminar please contact Miss Alex Webster
